This has always been a part of what we do. Litter picks for community service are included in almost every school trip. We are considered locally quite obstinate about reducing our use of plastic. Guesthouses are asked to assist by avoiding any one-use items. The Tourism Bureau has been bombarded with requests for environmental signs (2013), and for event companies to stop leaving litter (2013, 2014, 2015 …).
In June 2017 Tori was made a ‘River Mayor’ of Houwu, garnering national media attention. She has met Beijing-based documentary makers for China’s River Mayors and hopes to swap ideas to improve local initiatives.
We are trying to get Moganshan’s Government, Environment Bureau and Hotels Association to agree a way forward to reduce the use of plastic bottles, starting with 500ml bottled water.
We also arrange local school-based viewings and workshops for the award-winning 2016 documentary A Plastic Ocean.
